Form 4868

Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File

  • Form 4868 requests a six-month extension to file your federal return. Submit it on time and complete it correctly—the IRS grants it automatically and does not ask for a reason.

  • An extension is more time to file, not more time to pay. If you may owe, pay as much as you can by the original due date (typically April 15) to limit interest and late-payment penalties.

Understand Your Form 4868

Your name, address, and Social Security number

Enter your name, address, and SSN as shown on Form 4868 so the IRS can match this extension to the return you file later. Use the instructions if you need details for joint returns or ITINs.

Line 1: Your estimated total tax liability

This is the total tax you expect to owe for the year, before subtracting withholding, estimated payments, and other credits—follow Line 1 on the form and the instructions in IRS Form 4868.

Lines 2–3: Payments and your balance due

Report total payments already made toward the year, such as federal income tax withheld and estimated tax payments. The form subtracts those amounts from your estimate to show the balance due on Line 3, using the wording on your copy of Form 4868.

Line 4: Amount you’re paying with this form

If you submit a payment with your extension request, enter it on Line 4 (or the comparable payment line shown on the current form). Paying by the original due date helps limit interest and late-payment penalties on any balance.

Checkboxes: fiscal year, outside the U.S., Form 1040-NR

Check the boxes that apply if you file on a fiscal year basis, were outside the United States on the due date, or are filing Form 1040-NR (U.S. Nonresident Alien Income Tax Return). Follow the form and its instructions for each situation.
