Error Message When Registering From Email Using Prior Year Username & Password

TaxACT Online (over-the-web) allows a user to repeat the same Username and Password from year to year.  When choosing to register to use TaxACT Online for the current tax year, you may be prompted for different log in information depending on how you choose to register.  If you are registering from a link in an email offer that TaxACT sent and are receiving an error message, please see instructions provided below for assistance.

Register from TaxACT Online Email Offering Deluxe or Ultimate Bundle

  1. Click on the link within the email offer to register
  2. You will be prompted for your Username and Password as well as the last 4 digits of your Social Security Number (SSN)


  3. This information needs to match what was used on last years TaxACT Online account exactly
  4. If the system cannot verify the data (Password & last four digits of the SSN or if the password is incorrect but the SSN was correct) you have entered you will receive the following error message:


  5. If you enter the Password correctly but mistype the last four digits of the primary SSN, you will receive the error message shown directly below and you will then need to re-enter the last four digits of the SSN:

Register from TaxACT Online Email Offering Free Federal Edition

  1. Click on the link within the email offer to register
  2. You will be prompted for your Username, Password, Secret Question & Answer, and Email Address


  3. If the system cannot verify the data you entered (such as Password and email address) but can verify that the Username was used for the most recent prior tax year, you will receive the error message shown directly below which indicates that either you are using the wrong Username (belongs to someone else) or you have entered the Password or email address incorrectly:


  4. If the system can verify the Username and Password matches an account from the most recent prior tax year but the last four digits of the SSN do not match, you will receive the following error message and you will need to ensure that you have entered the last four digits of the primary SSN correctly:
