Form 8839 - Adoption Credit and Exclusion

Use Form 8839, Qualified Adoption Expenses to figure the amount of your adoption credit and any employer-provided adoption benefits you can exclude from your income. You can claim both the credit and the exclusion for expenses of adopting an eligible child.

To enter information for the adoption credit (Form 8839) in the TaxAct program, follow the steps below. 
Online
Dashboard
  1. From within your TaxAct return, click Deductions & Credits. 
    • On smaller devices, click the menu at the top left corner of your screen, then make your selection.
  2. Click the You & Your Family drop-down.
  3. Click Add beside Adoption Credit
  4. Complete the rest of the interview process. 
Classic
  1. From within your TaxAct return, click Federal. 
    • On smaller devices, click the menu at the top left corner of your screen, then make your selection.
  1. Click the Other Credits drop-down, then click Qualified adoption expenses.
  2. Complete the rest of the interview process. 
Desktop
  1. From within your TaxAct return, click Federal. 
  2. Click the Other Credits drop-down, then click Qualified adoption expenses.
  3. Complete the rest of the interview process. 
2025 Changes
  • Qualified adoption expenses are limited to $17,280 per qualifying child
  • These benefits apply to international, domestic, private, or public foster care adoptions.
  • Up to $5,000 of the adoption credit is now refundable. 
    • Any remaining credit is nonrefundable and can be carried forward for up to five years (at which it expires).
