Vehicle Expense - Entering Actual Expense in Program

To enter the actual vehicle expense information in the TaxAct program (which will transfer to Schedule C (Form 1040) Profit or Loss From Business, Line 9):

  1. From within your TaxAct return (Online or Desktop), click Federal. On smaller devices, click in the upper left-hand corner, then click Federal.
  2. Click Business Income in the Federal Quick Q&A Topics menu to expand, then click Business income or loss from a sole proprietorship.
  3. Click + Add Schedule C to create a new copy of the form or click Edit to review a form already created.
  4. Continue with the interview process to enter all of the appropriate information.
  5. On the screen titled Great! Let's get started on expenses for this business, click Enter expenses.
  6. On the screen titled Would you like to review vehicle expenses for this business?, click Yes.
  7. On the screen titled Depreciation and Vehicle Expense - Asset Description, select either "Car" or "Light Truck/SUV" from the Asset type drop-down, then click Continue.
  8. On the screen titled Vehicles - Miles Driven, enter the vehicle miles driven to calculate the standard mileage rate, then click Continue.
  9. On the screen titled Vehicles - Actual or Standard, select the method you prefer to use, then click Continue.
