COVID-19 Update:

The IRS and the U.S. Treasury department have extended the federal filing and tax payment deadlines to July 15, 2020.

For more information:

The requirements for filing a state extension vary by state. The process for your specific state will be explained in the filing steps.

To file a state extension:

  1. From within your TaxAct® return (Online or Desktop) click Filing. On smaller devices, click in the upper left-hand corner, then choose Filing
  2. Click File Extension
  3. Choose Federal and State or State Only as appropriate for your situation. You must have a state attached to your return for these options to appear
  4. The program will proceed with the interview questions for you to enter or review your extension information

In some cases, no extension form is needed. The program will indicate what is required for your state. If you need to print a payment voucher or extension form, you will be prompted to do so in the filing steps.
