Reject Codes IND-039, IND-040, and IND-041

To authorize the IRS to discuss your return with someone else (for example, a relative or paid tax preparer), you must provide that person's name, phone number, and PIN (any 5-digit number created by the designee). This information will be entered into the Q&A and will print on Schedule 6 (Form 1040), Foreign Address and Third Party Designee.

Tax professionals should complete the Paid Preparers section of Form 1040, Page 1 and check the 3rd party Designee checkbox.

To change this selection in the TaxAct® Q&A:

  1. From within your TaxAct return (Online or Desktop) click Federal. On smaller devices, click in the upper left-hand corner, then select Federal.
  2. Click Miscellaneous Topics in the Federal Quick Q&A Topics menu to expand the category, then click Third Party Designee
  3. If you select Yes, you must complete each of the fields on the next screen. If you don't want to name a third party designee, click No and repeat the electronic filing steps to resubmit the return.
