How to Access TaxAct Tools in Claude

How do I access TaxAct tools in Claude?

You can connect Claude to TaxAct using TaxAct’s Model Context Protocol (MCP) server. Once connected, you can explore filing options, compare costs for your situation, and get guided help in chat—similar to working with TaxAct from your browser, without leaving Claude. Watch the video TaxAct in Claude for a demonstration.

Here’s what you can do after you connect:

  • Get oriented on filing: Describe your situation in natural language (for example, that you need to file your taxes). Claude can use TaxAct tools to ask a few questions—such as filing status, income type, and the kind of help you want—and then suggest next steps.
  • Review filing options and costs: See how TaxAct products and add-ons may apply to your scenario, including links to compare filing costs when available.
  • Move toward filing: Follow prompts to start filing or get expert guidance, depending on what you choose.

What do I need to connect Claude to TaxAct?

You’ll need:

  • An active Anthropic Claude subscription (for example, Claude.ai or Claude Desktop), and
  • Permission to add a custom MCP connector in your Claude app settings.

NOTE Tax rules, product names, and prices change. Any prices or examples shown in Claude are for reference only. Always confirm current offerings and amounts on TaxAct.com or in the product.

How do I connect Claude to TaxAct (MCP)?

TaxAct connects as a custom connector pointing at TaxAct’s MCP endpoint. Follow these steps (as shown in the Claude desktop app):

  1. Open Claude and go to Settings.
  2. In the sidebar, select Connectors.
  3. At the bottom of the Connectors list, click Add custom connector.
  4. In the Add custom connector dialog, enter:
    • Name: TaxAct (or another label you’ll recognize).
    • Remote MCP server URL: enter https://mcp.taxact.com/mcp
      • IMPORTANT: The server URL must be entered exactly as shown above.
  5. Review the trust notice (only use connectors from sources you trust), then click Add.
  6. Confirm that TaxAct (Custom) appears in your connectors list. You can use Configure or the menu […] next to the connector to adjust options if needed.

NOTE If you use Claude on the web, open your account menu and find Settings (sometimes under Profile), then Connectors, and add the custom connector the same way.

How do I start using TaxAct in chat?

After the connector is added, open a new chat and try a simple tax prompt. For example, “I need to file my taxes.”

Claude may show a short flow (for example, questions about filing status, how you earn income, and what kind of help you want). Answer in the interactive cards or in the reply box. When tools load, you may see status such as loading or searching available tools. Wait for that to finish before continuing.

Example prompts to try:

  • “I need to file my taxes.”
  • “Compare filing costs for my situation.”
  • “What TaxAct option fits someone who is [single / married filing jointly] with W-2 income?”
  • “I want expert guidance while I file—what should I use?”

Are my Claude chats private?

When you use connectors, your conversation may be used by Anthropic so Claude can call tools on your behalf. Your data and conversation exchanged through the connector will not be retained or used on TaxAct's systems. Read Anthropic's policies for how Claude handles connector data. Do not paste full Social Security numbers, complete bank account numbers, or other highly sensitive data into chat unless you intend to share them according to those policies.

How do I disconnect TaxAct from Claude?

  1. Open Settings > Connectors.
  2. Find TaxAct (may show as Custom).
  3. Open the […] menu next to the connector and choose Remove (or equivalent).

Where can I get more help?
