Extension of Time to File Your Individual Tax Return
1
If you need an extension of time to file your tax return, you can create and file an extension Form 4868 to request a 6-month extension of time to file your return through TaxAct.

Note the following:
  • If you expect a refund, you don't need to file an extension, but it will protect you from late-filing penalties if you file later and actually owe tax.
  • The Failure to File Penalty (return or extension) is 5% of the unpaid taxes for each month or part of a month that a tax return is late.
  • Interest will start to accrue on any unpaid balance after April 15.
  • Some states require you to file a federal extension before you can file an extension with them.
  • We recommend importing your 1040 before filing an extension. You can do this in Basic Info.
