Fixing Incorrect Routing Number After E-File
1

If you e-filed your return with direct deposit or direct debit information, but the information is no longer correct, take the following steps.

  • If the return is rejected, you may correct the information within the return and then resubmit.
  • If the return is accepted, the IRS will still attempt to process the deposit or withdrawal. If the bank information does not match, or the account is closed, the bank should reject the transaction.
    • In the case of a refund, the IRS will then print a check and send it to the mailing address listed on the return.  To check your refund status, go to the IRS Where's My Refund? webpage.
    • In the case of an amount due (direct withdrawal), you will need to submit your payment another way. See https://www.irs.gov/payments for your options.
