Downloading and Installing TaxAct

Once you receive your order confirmation, you can download and install your TaxAct Desktop program. The steps vary depending on whether you are an Individual (Consumer) or a Professional.

TIP You can also download and install previously purchased software at no additional charge by following the steps below.

Individual (Consumer) Steps

To access the download file, follow these steps:

  1. Sign in to your TaxAct Account online.
  2. Click My Account > My Downloads.
  3. Click the 20YY to select a different download year, if needed.
  4. Click Download next to the name of the specific federal or state program you want to download.
    • Note: You'll need to download the federal program before you download any state program.
  5. Once your download is complete, open the downloaded file.
  6. On the screen titled Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?, click Yes.
  7. Continue with the on-screen steps to complete the installation.

Professional Steps

You can access the download file by following the steps listed in the FAQ Professional Editions - Simplified Installation Procedure, or by following these steps:

  1. Sign in to your TaxAct Account online.
  2. Click Orders & Downloads.
  3. Expand the applicable Tax Year 20YY section.
  4. Click Download next to the name of the specific federal or state program you want to download.
    • Note: You'll need to download the federal program before you download any state program.
  5. Once your download is complete, open the downloaded file.
  6. On the screen titled Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?, click Yes.
  7. Continue with the on-screen steps to complete the installation.
