Printing Your Return and Individual Forms

The print process will generate a Portable Document Format (PDF) file which can be viewed, printed, or saved from a PDF reader.

IMPORTANT. You must first have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed.

Online program users: For the security of your personal information, a printed or digital copy of your TaxAct® Online return is only available by signing into your account and printing or saving it yourself. We cannot mail, fax, or e-mail a paper or electronic copy. If you don't remember the username or password, you can use the appropriate links on the sign-in page.

Desktop/download users: To print your return or individual forms associated with your return, you must have the TaxAct® program and return file on your computer. If you no longer have the return file, you may contact the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 if you filed the return to request a copy. TaxAct® does not retain copies of returns that were prepared and electronically filed with the TaxAct® Desktop program.

Printing Your Return

  1. From within your TaxAct Online return, click the Print Center in the left column.
  2. Click Return
  3. Enter the number of Federal and/or State copies you would like to print or save.
  4. Click Print and then the PDF link to view the return. Click the printer icon or the save icon (available when you hover your mouse over the bottom of the PDF form) to print the return or save it as a PDF file. 

Note: If you see a message indicating you have not paid your return fees, click the View/Pay link, which will direct you through the Paper Filing steps. Continue through the screens until you have processed the payment for your product fees and then repeat the steps to print.

Printing Individual Forms

  1. From within your TaxAct Online return, click the Print Center in the left column.
  2. Click Custom
  3. Click the checkbox(es) to the left of what you wish to print (the top section contains individual forms or schedules and the bottom section contains documents or worksheets). You may need to scroll down in the section to locate the item. 
  4. Click Print and then click the PDF link. Click the printer icon or the save icon (available when you hover your mouse over the bottom of the PDF form) to print or save the PDF copy.
Note: If you see a message indicating you have not paid your return fees, click the View/Pay link, which will direct you through the Paper Filing steps. Continue through the screens until you have processed the payment for your product fees and then repeat the steps to print. 

Desktop Printing Instructions

Please follow the appropriate instructions below to print your return or individual forms:

Printing Your Return

  1. In your TaxAct® program, you can do either of the following:
    • Click the Print button on the toolbar. In the Print Center screen, click Return.
    • From the top-level menu, click File > Print Return.
  2. Choose the desired number of copies. Click the Print button.
  3. Choose the output option. Click Select printer... if necessary to change the printer. Choose settings and click OK.

    Note. The program defaults to Print Preview. Your return will display in Adobe Acrobat (or the PDF reader installed on your computer). 

  4. Click Print.

    Note. Depending on the PDF reader you use, the Print option may be an icon on a tool or menu bar, a command on the File menu, or an icon on a toolbar in the bottom center of the screen when you hover the mouse there. The keyboard shortcut Ctrl + P should also work. 

Note. At either step 3 or 4 above, you can save a copy of the return as PDF. This will be a digital copy of the return that you can keep and print at any later time.

You can also print your return from the Filing section with the Mail Paper Return option. Carefully read the instructions in the program.

Printing Individual Forms

  1. Click the Forms button on the toolbar.
  2. Navigate to the form you wish to print using the navigation pane on the left side of the window.
  3. Double-Click on the desired form name and ensure that the form you wish to print is displayed on the right-hand pane.
  4. Click the Print icon in the Forms toolbar (to the left of the form name above the form).

Or you can use this method:

  1. On the main menu bar click File, then on the dropdown click Custom Print.
  2. Select Custom and check the box next to the form(s) you want to print.
  3. Click Print 

After either of those methods, see the first steps 3 and 4 above.

Note. File your return, schedules, and other attachments on standard size paper. Cutting the paper may cause problems in processing your return.
