Virginia - Code 106 Long-Term Premiums

If you are not seeing code "106" (long-term premiums) as a selection in the Virginia program, it is likely because first the long-term premiums must be entered in the Federal program, under Itemized Deductions (not to be calculated and taken on the Federal return, only to let code "106" appear on the Virginia return). Once that information is entered, you will see the code as a selection on the Virginia return.

To enter the long-term premiums paid, follow the steps below. 
Online
Dashboard
  1. From within your TaxAct return, click Deductions & Credits
    • On smaller devices, click the menu at the top left corner of your screen, then make your selection.
  2. Click the Medical drop-down.
  3. Click Add beside Medical Expenses
  4. Enter your medical insurance premiums paid (if applicable), then click Continue. Enter the Qualified long-term care premiums
  5. Do not select the age of person in the drop-list. 
  6. Complete the rest of the interview process. 
  7. Click State on the left to expand, then click Virginia.
  8. Under Virginia, click Deductions, then click Other Deductions
  9. On Virginia - Other Deductions, click Yes to view the Virginia – Deductions. Ensure that code number "106" and the Long-Term premium deduction amount are displayed.
Classic
  1. From within your TaxAct return, click Federal. 
    • On smaller devices, click the menu at the top left corner of your screen, then make your selection.
  2. Click the Itemized or Standard Deductions drop-down, then click Medical and dental expenses.
  3. Enter your medical insurance premiums paid (if applicable), then click Continue
  4. Enter the Qualified long-term care premiums
  5. Do not select the age of person in the drop-list. 
  6. Complete the rest of the federal interview process. 
  7. Click State on the left to expand, then click Virginia.
  8. Under Virginia, click Deductions, then click Other Deductions
  9. On Virginia - Other Deductions, click Yes to view the Virginia – Deductions. Ensure that code number "106" and the Long-Term premium deduction amount are displayed.
Desktop
  1. From within your TaxAct return, click Federal. 
  2. Click the Itemized or Standard Deductions drop-down, then click Medical and Dental expenses.
  3. Enter your medical insurance premiums paid (if applicable), then click Continue
  4. Enter the Qualified long-term care premiums
  5. Do not select the age of person in the drop-list.

  7. Click the State tab, and under Virginia, click Deductions, then click Other Deductions
  8. On Virginia - Other Deductions, click Yes to view the Virginia – Deductions. Ensure that code number "106" and the Long-Term premium deduction amount are displayed.
 
You will need to ignore the Yellow Alert "Warning: Insurance Premiums" when you run the Alerts which tells you to enter the age of the person for the Federal entry (this is ok because you do not want the deduction to be taken on the Federal Schedule A (Form 1040)).
