E-File Status
1

You may check the status of your own income tax return filed through TaxAct at our Electronic Filing Status Page.

To obtain your Electronic Filing Status:

  1. Choose the return type which you filed
  2. Enter your Social Security Number, Zip code, and last name
  3. Click Check E-File Status

This will display the status of your filed return.

Note. If you cannot find your return status:

  1. You may be entering the wrong Social Security Number (SSN).
    • The SSN entered should be the primary taxpayer SSN for the return (first SSN listed on the 1040). You cannot locate a return by the secondary taxpayer or a dependent.
    • There may be a typo in the primary taxpayer's SSN. Please verify the information entered in Basic Information.
  2. You may not have successfully completed the electronic filing process.
    • You may have progressed as far as printing but have not actually submitted electronically.
    • You may have unknowingly selected to paper file instead of electronically file. To successfully complete the electronic filing process, you must complete all steps and click the Submit button. If the submission was successful, you will see a screen indicating that your return was submitted.

If you provided an e-mail address in the electronic filing steps, you should receive two e-mails (unless you have a spam filter or an e-mail blocking device that would prevent you from receiving them):

  • The first e-mail will confirm that your return was successfully received.
  • The second e-mail will indicate whether or not your return has been accepted by the IRS or state agency.

Note that the second e-mail will not arrive until your return has been accepted or rejected by the applicable tax authority.

If it has been more than 24 hours, you have not received an e-mail confirmation, and you do not see your return listed, your return has not been received by our e-file server. Repeat the electronic filing steps to submit your return. If you continue to have difficulties, we encourage you to contact Electronic Filing Support.

If your return has been rejected, see Most Common E-file Error and Rejection Codes or Correct and Resubmit E-files. It is your responsibility to ensure that your return has been accepted by the IRS or state agency.

Preparers using the Professional Edition of TaxAct can check the status of their client returns through our new Professional Reports dashboard within your Practice Manager. You can view the Preparer's Electronic Filing Status page for more information.

The status of your electronically filed return on the TaxAct website comes directly from the acknowledgment by the IRS or state agency; we do not receive any acknowledgment if a return is mailed. We also have no further visibility into the processing of a refund at the IRS or state.
