Consumer Editions - E-Filing Just the State Return Without the Federal Return
1

To help prevent fraud, it is not possible to e-file most state returns if you have not e-filed your federal return with TaxAct. California is the only state return that can be e-filed without the federal return.

If you did NOT e-file your federal return with us

You can still prepare your non-California state return, but it will have to be paper-filed.

To print a paper copy of your state return which can then be mailed to the applicable state agency:

  1. From within your TaxAct return (Online or Desktop), click Filing to expand, then click Mail Paper Return. On smaller devices, click in the upper left-hand corner, then click Filing.
  2. The program will proceed with the interview screens for you to enter or review the appropriate information.
  3. You will then be prompted to print the return and its filing instructions (if you are printing a federal and state return, they will be on separate screens).

Before mailing the return(s), be sure to read the instructions. They will include important information such as where to file, what to attach to the return (i.e. W-2s, 1099s, etc.), refund or balance due, information about estimated tax payments, etc.

If you DID file your federal return with us

You can follow these steps to submit your state return:

  2. Select the Federal and/or state(s) you do not want to file by clicking the File Later link.
  3. Click Continue.
  4. The program will proceed with the interview screens for you to enter or review the appropriate information.
