Consumer Editions - E-Filing Just the State Return Without the Federal Return
1

To help prevent fraud, it is no longer possible to electronically file your state return if you have not electronically filed your federal return with TaxAct. If you did not electronically file your federal return with us, you can still prepare your state return, but it will have to be paper filed.

You may follow the steps below to print a paper copy of your return which can then be mailed to the applicable state agency:

  1. From within your TaxAct return (Online or Desktop), click on the Filing from the left. On smaller devices, click the menu icon in the upper left-hand corner, then choose Filing
  2. Click Mail Paper Return
  3. The program will proceed with the interview screens for you to enter or review the appropriate information
  4. You will then be prompted to print the return and its filing instructions (if you are printing a federal and state return, they will be on separate screens)

Before mailing the return(s), be sure to read the instructions. They will include important information such as where to file, what to attach to the return (i.e. W-2s, 1099s, etc.), refund or balance due, information about estimated tax payments, etc.
