Earned Income Credit Not Wanted on Return
1

The Earned Income Credit (EIC) is calculated by the program automatically if the return qualifies for the credit.

The only way to remove the credit from a return that actually qualifies for the credit is to answer a question in a way to disqualify it (only those using the paid preparer's program are able to override the amount and still e-file the return). This can be done via the boxes at the bottom of the EIC worksheet (in the Qualifications for the Earned Income Credit section), however you should understand the IRS may question why a return that qualifies for the credit does not contain it.

To access the check boxes at the bottom of the EIC worksheet:

  1. From within your TaxAct return (Online or Desktop), click Federal. On smaller devices, click in the upper left-hand corner, then click Federal.
  2. Click Other Credits in the Federal Quick Q&A Topics menu to expand, then click Earned income credit.
  3. Continue with the interview process to enter all of the appropriate information.
  4. On the screen titled Do any of the following situations apply to you?, if you check any of the situations shown, you will disqualify the return for the EIC.
