Earned Income Credit Not Wanted on Return
1

The Earned Income Credit (EIC) is calculated by the program automatically if the return qualifies for the credit.

The only way to remove the credit from a return that actually qualifies for the credit is to answer a question in a way to disqualify it (only those using the paid preparer's program are able to override the amount and still electronically file the return). This can be done via the boxes at the bottom of the EIC worksheet (in the section Qualifications for the Earned Income Credit), however you should understand the IRS may question why a return that qualifies for the credit does not contain it.

To access the check boxes at the bottom of the EIC worksheet, follow these steps:

  1. From within your TaxAct return (Online or Desktop), click Federal.  On smaller devices, click the menu icon in the upper left-hand corner, then click Federal.
  2. Click Other Credits in the Federal Quick Q&A Topics menu to expand the category and then click Earned income credit
  3. Any box checked will disqualify the return for the EIC
