Red Alert - Form W-2G - State Abbreviation
1

If you are seeing the Red Alert in the electronic filing steps, Error or Omission: Form W-2G - Winner State Abbreviation, this is indicating you have not entered a state of residency for the taxpayer or spouse on Form W-2G Certain Gambling Winnings, an entry made in the Basic Information section of the Q&A (in the foreign country field) may be causing this Alert.

To remove a foreign address and define a U.S. address (if you need help accessing the address section in the TaxAct program, go to our Foreign Address - Entering in Program FAQ):

  1. From within the address section, click Enter a foreign address, then select "None selected" from the Foreign country drop-down. Note. "None Selected" is a different option than "None."
  2. Click Enter a U.S. address, and select the correct state from the State drop-down for your situation.

If the previous steps did not solve the issue of the Alert in the filing steps, then it may be possible the foreign country field was also entered on the Form W-2G like it was in the Basic Information section of the Q&A (if you need help accessing Form W-2G in the TaxAct program, go to our Form W-2G - Entering Gambling Winnings in Program FAQ.):

  1. From within your Form W-2G, continue with the interview process until you reach the screen titled Gambling Winnings - W-2G - Payer's Information.
  2. Click Enter a foreign address, then select "None Selected" from the Foreign country drop-down. Note. "None Selected" is a different option than "None."
  3. Click Enter a U.S. address, select the correct state from the State drop-down for your situation
