Red Alert - Form W-2G - State Abbreviation
1

If you are seeing the Red Alert in the electronic filing steps, Error or Omission:  Form W-2G - Winner State Abbreviation, which is indicating you have not entered a state of residency for the taxpayer or spouse on Form W-2G, an entry made in the Basic Information section of the Q&A (in the foreign country field) may be causing this Alert.  To address the Alert, please follow these steps:

  1. From within your TaxAct return (Online or Desktop), click Federal. On smaller devices, click the menu icon in the upper left-hand corner, then select Federal.
  2. Click Basic Information in the Federal Quick Q&A Topics menu to expand that category and then click Address
  3. Continue until you reach the screen titled Where do you live?
  4. On this screen, TEMPORARILY select Enter a foreign address
  5. Then select None Selected for the Foreign country field (it is listed at the top of the drop down list when you click on that field).  NOTE: None Selected as an option is different than selecting None as an option.
  6. Click Enter a U.S. address and select the correct State for your situation and then click Continue
  7. Click Filing and repeat the steps and the Alert should be gone.  If it is not, then follow the steps below which address the problem if at one point the same foreign country field was completed on the Form W-2G like it was in the Basic Information section of the Q&A.

Follow the steps below if it is possible the foreign country field was also entered on the Form W-2G like it was in the Basic Information section of the Q&A (NOTE: you do not need to complete these steps unless the steps above did not solve the issue of the Alert in the filing steps):

  1. From within your TaxAct return (Online or Desktop), click Federal. On smaller devices, click the menu icon in the upper left-hand corner, then select Federal.
  2. Click Other Income in the Federal Quick Q&A Topics menu to expand the category and then click Gambling winnings
  3. Select Yes and then Continue to reach the screen where you can select Review to review the form that was mentioned in the Alert
  4. On this screen, TEMPORARILY select Enter a foreign address for the Payer's state field (listed at the bottom of the drop down list when you click on that field)
