Form 1116 - Duplicate Income Appearing in Part I

If you are seeing duplicate income listed in Part I of Form 1116 Foreign Tax Credit, it may mean a country has not been selected on one or more of the supporting documents. Please use the steps below to review your Forms 1099-INT Interest Income, Form(s) 1099-DIV Dividends and Distributions, and/or manual input worksheets.

Form 1099-INT

To review information from Form 1099-INT:

  1. From within your TaxAct return (Online or Desktop), click Federal. On smaller devices, click in the upper left-hand corner, then click Federal.
  2. Click Investment Income in the Federal Quick Q&A Topics menu to expand, then click Interest income (Form 1099-INT).
  3. Click + Add Form 1099-INT to create a new copy of the form or click Edit to review a form already created.
  4. Click Quick Entry to scroll down to answer all applicable questions or click Step-by-Step Guidance to proceed with the program interview questions.
  5. On the screen titled Interest Income - Investment Expenses and Foreign Taxes, select a country from the 7. Foreign country drop-down, then click Continue.

Form 1099-DIV

To review information from Form 1099-DIV:

  1. From within your TaxAct return (Online or Desktop), click Federal. On smaller devices, click in the upper left-hand corner, then click Federal.
  2. Click Investment Income in the Federal Quick Q&A Topics menu to expand, then click Dividend income (Form 1099-DIV).
  3. Click + Add Form 1099-DIV to create a new copy of the form or click Edit to review a form already created.
  4. Click Quick Entry to scroll down to answer all applicable questions or click Step-by-Step Guidance to proceed with the program interview questions.
  5. On the screen titled Dividend Income - Foreign Tax Paid, select a country from the 8. Foreign country drop-down, then click Continue.

Foreign Tax Credit (Form 1116)

To review information from Form 1116:

  1. From within your TaxAct return (Online or Desktop), click Federal. On smaller devices, click in the upper left-hand corner, then click Federal.
  2. Click Other Credits in the Federal Quick Q&A Topics menu to expand, then click Foreign tax credit.
  3. On the screen titled Foreign Tax Credit - Interview Options, click Review on the "Manual Input Worksheet" row.
  4. Continue with the interview process to enter all of the appropriate information.
  5. On the screen titled Foreign Tax Credit - Manually Entered Worksheets, click + Add Form 1116 Worksheet to create a new copy of the form or click Edit to review a form already created.
  6. On the screen titled Foreign Tax Credit - Manual Entry - Income Category, select an income category, then click Continue.
  7. On the screen titled Foreign Tax Credit - Manual Entry - Country, select a country from the Select the name of the foreign country or U.S. possession from the list drop-down, then click Continue.
