New York - State Itemized Deduction vs. Federal Itemized Deduction
1
TaxAct will automatically use whichever deduction gives you the greater benefit—your New York standard deduction or your New York itemized deduction. Because New York does not follow federal itemized deduction rules, the amount you can itemize on your New York return is different from your federal Schedule A total.
Your New York itemized deduction is calculated on Form IT-196, which adjusts your federal itemized deductions based on New York law. These adjustments may reduce your allowable New York itemized deduction, including limitations for certain state tax items and reductions that can apply when your income exceeds New York thresholds.
After the calculation is complete, the higher of the New York standard deduction or the New York itemized deduction is carried to your state return:
Form IT-201 (Residents): Line 34
Form IT-203 (Nonresidents/Part-Year Residents): Line 33
TaxAct performs this comparison automatically and applies the correct deduction to your return.
