An amount appearing in box 3 of IRS Form SSA-1099 Social Security Benefit Statement would not be entered in the TaxAct program in box 5. Box 5 on the form is the Net Benefits for the current year and has already taken the amount from box 3 into account.

To enter or review information from Form SSA-1099 (Social Security Benefits) or Form RRB-1099 (Railroad Retirement Board Social Security) in the TaxAct program:

  1. From within your TaxAct return (Online or Desktop), click Federal. On smaller devices, click the menu icon in the upper left-hand corner, then select Federal.
  2. Click Social Security Benefits in the Federal Quick Q&A Topics menu
  3. The program will proceed with the interview questions for you to enter or review the appropriate information

An example of Form SSA-1099 is available in IRS Publication 915 Social Security and Equivalent Railroad Retirement Benefits, page 20.
