Married Filing Separate - Lived Apart from Your Spouse the Entire Year

If your filing status is Married Filing Separate (MFS), you will need to indicate whether you lived with your spouse during the year.

  1. From within your TaxAct return, click About.
    • On smaller devices, click the menu at the top left corner of your screen, then make your selection. 
  2. Beside your name, click Edit
  3. Continue through the interview till you get to the What best describes your relationship status? screen. 
  4. Make sure that your filing status is marked as Married with the question Will you file this return with your spouse? marked No
  5. Click Continue and Continue again. 
  6. In the Spouse section, click Edit.
  7. Check the box I lived apart from my spouse the entire year.
  8. Click Continue
Classic Navigation
  1. From within your TaxAct return, click Basic Info.
    • On smaller devices, click the menu at the top left corner of your screen, then make your selection. 
  2. Click Edit beside Marital Status
  3. Make sure that Married is selected, with the question Will you file this return with your spouse? marked No.  Click Continue
  4. Check the box I lived apart from my spouse the entire year.
  5. Click Continue
Desktop
  1. From within your TaxAct return, click Basic Info.
  2. Click the Filing Status tab. 
  3. Ensure that Married filing separately is marked and click Continue
  4. Check the box I lived apart from my spouse the entire year.
  5. Click Continue
