Signing your electronic tax return requires identity verification and information verification.

To provide identity verification: Identity verification will be your adjusted gross income (AGI) amount found on Form 1040 (Line 11 on the 2020 form). If you no longer have access to last year's return, you can go to the IRS Get Your Tax Record webpage to view your prior-year AGI.

Enter zero (0) and leave the Personal Identification Number (PIN) field blank if you:

  • did not file a return last year,
  • did not file last year's return before December of this year, or
  • are a first time tax filer this year

To keep a record of the AGI amount: Remember to record the original AGI amount, before any amendments were filed. If you filed a joint return last year, provide the full AGI for both spouses this year.

To provide information verification: Enter your date of birth, a new five-digit PIN (it can be the same as last year's PIN), and the date.

Once you've completed the electronic signature, continue with the interview process to e-file your return.

Note that any link in the information above is updated each year automatically and will take you to the most recent version of the webpage or document at the time it is accessed.
