Signing your electronic tax return requires identity verification and information verification.

To provide identity verification:

Identity verification will be your adjusted gross income (AGI) amount found on Form 1040 (Line 7 on the 2018 form). If you no longer have access to last year's return, you may use the IRS Get Transcript Online tool to view your prior-year AGI. (You'll need to pass the IRS Secure Access identity verification process. Select the Tax Return Transcript option and use only the Adjusted Gross Income line entry.

Enter "0" and leave the Personal Identification Number (PIN) field blank if you:

  • did not file a return last year,
  • did not file last year's return before December of this year, or
  • are a first time tax filer this year

Keep a record of the AGI amount:

Remember to record the original AGI amount, before any amendments were filed. If you filed a joint return last year, provide the full AGI for both spouses this year.

To provide information verification:

To verify your information and sign the return, enter your date of birth, a new five-digit PIN (it can be the same as last year's PIN), and the date.

Once you've completed the electronic signature, continue through the e-filing steps.
