Per IRS Form 1040 Instructions, page 21:

Line 1 - Wages, Salaries, Tips, etc.

Enter the total of your wages, salaries, tips, etc. If a joint return, also include your spouse's income. For most people, the amount to enter on this line should be shown in box 1 of their Form(s) W-2.But the following types of income also must be included in the total on line 1.

  • All wages received as a household employee. An employer isn’t required to provide a Form W-2 to you if he or she paid you wages of less then $2,100 in 2019. If you received wages as a household employee and you didn’t receive a Form W-2 because an employer paid you less than $2,100 in 2019, enter "HSH" and the amount not reported to you on a Form W-2 in the space to the left of line 1. For information on employment taxes for household employees, see Tax Topic 756.

To enter this income into the TaxAct® program:

  1. From within your TaxAct return (Online or Desktop), click Federal. On smaller devices, click the menu icon in the upper left-hand corner, then select Federal.
  2. Click Wages and Salaries to expand the category and then click Wages received as household employee - not reported on Form W-2
  3. The program will proceed with the interview questions for you to enter or review the appropriate information

The text "HSH" and the total amount of the wages received as a household employee will be printed on the dotted line next to line 1 when you print your return.

Note: If this text is applicable to your return, determined by the information entered, the TaxAct program will automatically place the text in the correct location. The text will appear on the printed (or print previewed) form, but is not visible on the screen view of the form (only available to users of the Desktop version of the program).
