Red Alert - Taxpayer is Under Age 16 and Cannot E-File
1

A taxpayer that is under age 16 at the end of the year and has never filed a tax return does not qualify to e-file. In this case, there are two options:

  • A paid tax preparer can complete and e-file the return
  • The taxpayer can paper file the return

If the taxpayer is under 16 at the end of the year and filed a previous tax return:

  1. From within your TaxAct return (Online or Desktop), click Review, click Double-check, then click Run the review (desktop program: click Alerts instead of Double-check).
  2. Continue with the interview process until you reach the screen titled Error or Omission: E-Filing, then click the Checkbox next to Check here if the primary taxpayer is under 16 at year end but filed a tax return in a previous year.

For a paid tax preparer to e-file the return:

  1. From within your TaxAct Professional Edition program, click Review, click Alerts, then click Run the review.
  2. Continue with the interview process until you reach the screen titled Error or Omission: E-Filing, then click the Checkbox next to Check here if the primary taxpayer is under 16 at year end but filed a tax return in a previous year (the paid preparer will check the box regardless, in order to override the program).
  3. Continue through the electronic filing steps, and use the Practitioner PIN method to file the return.
