Scannable Returns
1

Some states allow for the submission of "scannable" tax returns. This means that, in addition to a printed return, the state will also use returns that can be scanned by a computer. They scan the form with a machine that can read the line numbers and values faster than a human can type them into their system.

If your state allows for this type of form, the TaxAct program will print it. This method will avoid errors caused by handwriting and traditional character recognition computer programs.

The scannable return (California's, for example) may not look like the traditional tax return. It may have extra gaps or blank spaces and barcodes. Please rest assured that the form printed from TaxAct is the correct format for your state.
