To e-file an Illinois tax return, you (and/or spouse) must have:

If you (and/or spouse) have not filed an Illinois tax return within the past two years and you (and/or spouse) do not have a valid Illinois driver's license or Illinois State ID, you must paper file your Illinois return. However, you (and/or spouse) should be assigned an IL-PIN to e-file next year.
Note. If your return is rejected with Reject Code IL1040-8000-2, IL1040-8000-2, IL1040-10500-3 or IL1040-9900-2, the signature alternative for the taxpayer (and/or spouse) does not match the IDOR Records.
Your (and/or spouse’s) alternative signature options depend on whether or not you have filed an Illinois tax return within the past two years.
If you filed an Illinois tax return within the past two years, the IDOR should have provided you with an Illinois Personal Identification Number (IL-PIN) on your IL-1040 booklet or on a postcard. To obtain your IL-PIN, visit the IL-PIN Inquiry website or call 1-800-732-8866.
For your signature alternative, you have three options (shown below). The option you select for your signature alternative must match the IDOR’s records or your return will be rejected.
If you have not filed an Illinois tax return within the past two years, the IDOR has not issued you an Illinois Personal Identification Number (IL-PIN) and you will need a valid Illinois driver’s license or state ID to e-file.
