Form 1040 - Removing Penal Income Earned While in Prison or Jail
1

If you are seeing "PRI" printed next to Form 1040 U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, Line 1, this is because you have entered an amount of wages received for work done while an inmate in a penal institution (i.e. a prison or jail).

OR

If the TaxAct program is stating your return is currently not eligible for the Earned Income Credit (EIC) because there is no earned income on the return, you may have entered wages (or other earned income), but then indicated that income was received while an inmate in a penal institution (i.e. a prison or jail).

To review or remove this entry in the TaxAct program:

  1. From within your TaxAct return (Online or Desktop), click Federal. On smaller devices, click in the upper left-hand corner, then click Federal.
  2. Click Other Credits in the Federal Quick Q&A Topics menu to expand, then click Earned income credit.
  3. Continue with the interview process to enter all of the appropriate information.
  4. On the screen titled Do any of the following situations apply to you?, check You received wages for work while an inmate in a penal institution, then click Continue.
  5. On the screen titled Enter wages received for work done while an inmate in a penal institution, enter/change the Amount, then click Continue.

Note. If this text is applicable to your return, determined by the information entered, the TaxAct program will automatically place the text in the correct location on the return. The text will appear on the printed (or print previewed) form, but is not visible on the screen view of the form (only available to users of the Desktop version of the program).
