Dependent of Another Taxpayer Filing Their Own Return

If you are claimed as a dependent on another person’s tax return, you must indicate this when filing your own return. Selecting this checkbox: 
  • Limits your standard deduction amount.
  • Prevents you from claiming dependents of your own.
  • May make you ineligible for certain tax credits and deductions (though you may still qualify for others depending on your income and other circumstances).
To indicate that you are the dependent of another person, follow the steps below.

You are prompted to answer the question Can you be claimed as a dependent? when you create a return and start the interview process. 

If you mark this checkbox in error, 
  1. Click About.
    • On smaller devices, click the menu at the top left corner of your screen, then make your selection. 
  2. To the right of your name, click Edit
  3. Follow the interview until you see the question Can you be claimed as a dependent? Uncheck the box and click Continue
If you did not mark the box, but decide to mark it later, follow these steps: 
  1. Click Resources
  2. Choose the Topics Assistant.
  3. Search for dependent on.
  4. Select Dependent on another return
  5. Click View Topic

  1. From within your TaxAct return, click Federal
    • On smaller devices, click the menu at the top left corner of your screen, then make your selection. 
  2. Click Basic Information, then click Dependent on someone else's tax return.
  3. On the screen Can you be claimed as a dependent? check I can be claimed as a dependent on someone else's return and click Continue

  1. From within your TaxAct return, click Federal
  2. Click Basic Information, then click Dependent on someone else's tax return.
  3. On the screen Can you be claimed as a dependent? check I can be claimed as a dependent on someone else's return and click Continue
