State and Local Taxes - Paid

To enter your state and/or local income taxes paid (NOT withholding or estimated tax payments):

  1. From within your TaxAct return (Online or Desktop), click Federal. On smaller devices, click in the upper left-hand corner, then click Federal.
  2. Click Itemized or Standard Deductions in the Federal Quick Q&A Topics menu to expand, then click Taxes paid.
  3. Continue with the interview process to enter all of the appropriate information.
  4. On the screen titled Enter state and local income taxes you paid during 2020, enter the Other state and local income taxes paid amount, then click Continue.

An example of taxes you would enter here are taxes paid in 2021 for a balance due on your 2020 tax return.

The state taxes withheld on Form W-2 Wage and Tax Statement and entered within the Wages and Salaries topic in the Federal Quick Q&A Topics menu will automatically transfer to Schedule A (Form 1040) Itemized Deductions, Line 5, as an itemized deduction.
