State and Local Taxes - Paid

To enter your state and/or local income taxes paid (NOT withholding or estimated tax payments):

  1. From within your TaxAct® return (Online or Desktop) click Federal. On smaller devices, click the menu icon in the upper left-hand corner, then select Federal
  2. Click Itemized or Standard Deductions to expand the category and then click Taxes paid
  3. Enter your taxes paid in the Other state and local taxes paid field (you may need to scroll down).

An example of taxes you would enter here are taxes paid in 2018 for a balance due on your 2017 tax return.

The state taxes withheld on Form W-2 entered within the Wages and Salaries in the Federal Quick Q&A Topics menu section of the Federal Q&A will automatically transfer to Schedule A, Line 5 as an itemized deduction.
