Sales Tax - More Than Five States
1

TaxAct® does not support the entry of more than five states in Schedule A (Form 1040) Itemized Deductions.

If you have more than five states to enter, you will need to manually calculate each state, then enter one total.

To manually calculate the tax, use the worksheet and table in the instructions for Schedule A, or use the calculator on the IRS website.

To enter the Sales Tax Deduction in TaxAct:

  1. From within your TaxAct return (Online or Desktop), click Federal. On smaller devices, click in the upper left-hand corner, then click Federal.
  2. Click Itemized or Standard Deductions in the Federal Quick Q&A Topics menu to expand, then click Taxes paid.
  3. Continue with the interview process to enter all of the appropriate information.
  4. On the screen titled Do you want to enter state and local sales tax information?, click Yes.
  5. Click Actual Amount, enter the Actual state and local general sales tax paid amount for all states, then click Continue.

Note that any link in the information above is updated each year automatically and will take you to the most recent version of the document at the time it is accessed.
