Married Filing Separate - Itemized or Standard Deduction
1

If your filing status is Married Filing Separate (MFS), you and your spouse must either both itemize deductions or both use the standard deduction.

To indicate that you and your spouse are both itemizing:

  1. From within your TaxAct return (Online or Desktop), click Federal. On smaller devices, click in the upper left-hand corner, then click Federal.
  2. Click Itemized or Standard Deductions in the Federal Quick Q&A Topics menu to expand, then click either Use standard deduction or Use itemized deductions - you will see one or the other, but not both.
  3. Check Use my itemized deductions (and uncheck Use my standard deduction, if necessary), then continue with the interview process to enter all of the appropriate information.

You will also need to indicate that your spouse itemizes:

  1. From within your TaxAct return (Online or Desktop), click Federal. On smaller devices, click in the upper left-hand corner, then click Federal.
  2. Click Basic Information in the Federal Quick Q&A Topics menu to expand, then click Filing status.
  3. Select Married filing separately, then click Continue.
  4. Click Basic Info in the left column, click the Spouse tab, check My spouse itemized deductions on their separate return, then continue with the interview process to enter all of the appropriate information.
