Form 8880 - Full-Time Student Status
1

If you were a full-time student, and reported that in the TaxAct program, you can't attach Form 8880 to Schedule 3 (Form 1040) Additional Credits and Payments to receive the retirement savings contributions credit on line 4. If you were not a full-time student, and you need to edit that information in the TaxAct program, follow the steps below. Form 8880 Credit for Qualified Retirement Savings Contributions will then be accessible in your return.

To change the student status for the Retirement Savings Contribution Credit:

  1. From within your TaxAct return (Online or Desktop), click Federal (on smaller devices, click in the top left corner of your screen, then click Federal).
  2. Click the Other Credits dropdown, then click Retirement savings contributions credit.
  3. Continue with the interview process until you reach the screen titled Was [Name] a full-time student during part of any five months during 2022?
  4. Click the checkbox next to [Name] qualified as a full-time student during 2022 to uncheck the box, and continue with the interview process to enter your information.

Per IRS Instructions for Form 8880, page 2:

You were a student if during any part of 5 calendar months of 2022 you:

  • Were enrolled as a full-time student at a school; or
  • Took a full-time, on-farm training course given by a school or a state, county, or local government agency.

A school includes technical, trade, and mechanical schools. It doesn’t include on-the-job training courses, correspondence schools, or schools offering courses only through the Internet.
