Note. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) modified or suspended most of the itemized deductions you may have claimed in the past. The only employees eligible to deduct employee expenses with Form 2106 are Armed Forces reservists, qualified performing artists, fee-basis state or local government officials, or employees with impairment-related work expenses.
There is only one Form 2106 available for the taxpayer, and one for the spouse. Each would combine employee business expenses on his/her form as long as that amount would flow to the same line in the return for both sets of business expenses. Below are instructions to allow multiple vehicles (up to 4) to be added to each single Form 2106. While the IRS only allows electronic filing of one form for the taxpayer and one for the spouse, each of those forms can have two pages of page 2 attached for a total of 4 vehicles each (two on the first page 2 and two on the second page 2).
Note. Although it is possible to complete two Forms 2106 for one individual, Red Alerts will appear as you are only allowed to electronically file with one each.
- From within your TaxAct® return (Online or Desktop) click Federal. On smaller devices, click in the upper left-hand corner, then select Federal.
- Depending on your occupation, do one of the following:
- Armed Forces reservist
- Click Other Adjustments
- Click National Guard/Reserve member from Form 2106 in the Federal Quick Q&A Topics menu.
- On the Summary screen, click +Form Form 2106 to create a new form or click Review to view or change entries for a form you have already entered.
- Enter your Occupation and click Continue
- Select Armed Forces reservist and click Continue twice
- Click Yes on the screen titled Employee Expenses - Unreimbursed Expenses
- The program will proceed with the interview questions for you to enter or review the appropriate information
- Qualified performing artist or Fee-basis state or local official:
- Click Other Adjustments
- Click Qualified Performing Artist or Fee-Basis Government Official from Form 2106 in the Federal Quick Q&A Topics menu.
- On the Summary screen, click +Add Form 2106 to create a new form or click Review to view or change entries for a form you have already entered.
- Enter your Occupation and click Continue
- Select Qualified performing artist or Fee-basis state or local government official and click Continue
- Click Yes on the screen titled Employee Expenses-Unreimbursed Expenses
- The program will proceed with the interview questions for you to enter or review the appropriate information
- Employee with impairment-related work expenses:
- Click Itemized or Standard Deductions
- Click Impairment-related work expenses of persons with disabilities in the Federal Quick Q&A Topics menu.
- On the Summary screen, click +Add Form 2106 to create a new form or click Review to view or change entries for a form you have already entered.
- Enter your Occupation and click Continue
- Select Impaired-related work expenses as an employee with a disability and click Continue
- Click Yes on the screen titled Employee Expenses - Unreimbursed Expenses
- The program will proceed with the interview questions for you to enter or review the appropriate information
Note. You may enter information for up to four vehicles for this Form 2106.
To add/review/modify the second Form 2106, you would just continue through the screens until you reach the screen Employee Expenses - Summary and click Add. Alternatively, you could follow the first set of steps above to reach the screen Employee Expenses - Summary. Proceed through the screens for the second Form 2106 and then add additional vehicles if needed to this second form.
When you print Form 2106, you may have two page 2s print if you have entered information for four vehicles, since only two vehicles' information can print per page.
