TaxAct® will use the higher of your itemized deductions or the standard deduction for your filing status to maximize your tax benefit.
To select a deduction method in the TaxAct program:
From within your TaxAct return (Online or Desktop), click Federal (on smaller devices, click in the top left corner of your screen, then click Federal).
Click the Itemized or Standard Deductions dropdown, then click Use itemized deductions or Use standard deduction (the deduction option that appears will not be what the system had already chosen for your return based on your previous entries).
On the screen titled Choose itemized deductions or the standard deduction, the program will display your deduction amount for each option (TaxAct has already automatically chosen the option for you with the largest deduction). Click the checkbox next to Use my standard deduction or Use my itemized deductions, then click Continue.
