Earned Income Credit - Child Already Claimed
1

If your return was rejected by the IRS because a child claimed on your return was already claimed as a dependent AND for the Earned Income Credit (EIC) on someone else's return, you will need to delete this child as a dependent and delete the child from Schedule EIC Earned Income Credit.

To remove a child as a dependent, go to our Dependents - Entering and Reviewing FAQ, and choose the option to remove the dependent.

If you need to remove the child from Schedule EIC (if you need help accessing the EIC section in the TaxAct program, go to our Earned Income Credit - Entering in TaxAct FAQ):

  1. From within your EIC, continue with the interview process until you reach the screen titled Earned Income Credit - Qualifying Children.
  2. Click Review next to the child's name, click Yes to indicate the child could be claimed by another person for earned income credit purposes.
  3. Select the child's relationship to the other person in the drop-down that appears.
  4. To remove the child from Schedule EIC, select No, the other person will claim [the child] for the EIC.
