Notice CP 01A Lists Incorrect Tax Year
1
Recently, some taxpayers may have received an Identity Protection PIN letter from the IRS with the incorrect year listed.

Notice CP 01A, dated January 4, 2016, incorrectly indicates the IP PIN issued is to be used for filing the 2014 tax return. Instead, the IP PIN issued is to be used to file the 2015 tax return. The IRS apologizes for the confusion and inconvenience.

If you received a notice with the incorrect date, you can still use the IP PIN listed on the notice when filing your 2015 tax return. The IRS will begin accepting returns starting Jan. 19, 2016.

What does an IP PIN do?

Your IP PIN is a unique identifier that the IRS uses to verify your identity and ensure no other taxpayer uses your SSN to file a return. You must enter a valid SSN and IP PIN to successfully file your tax return.
