The TaxAct Enterprise Edition allows preparers to attach and associate documents and images with client returns for record keeping purposes. It allows the attachment of scanned image versions of client documents (W-2, 1099, etc.). Although this does not automatically import the document into the return, you are able to keep an electronic image copy of the document with the return file.
The process to attach a file is:
The document is now attached to your client's return.
As with image documents, you can attach other types of files to the return, but for any attachment, you would need the proper program to open that file. Files do not necessarily open in or with TaxAct. For example, if you attach a PDF, you would need Adobe Reader on the computer, or if you attached a Microsoft Word .doc file, you would need Microsoft Word.
In the Enterprise Edition, you can use the Document Manager to attach files by client return. The navigation list on the left shows each client, and you can expand each one to use the New Attachment item. You can view image documents within Document Manager, but other files will require opening externally with the associated program.
NOTE: Attachments created in this way are not electronically filed with the tax return. Only certain kinds of documents are accepted as attachments with electronic filing, and those must be attached in the filing steps. Please also see the following support topic on our website:
