The requirements for filing a state extension vary by state. The process for your specific state will be explained in the filing steps. 

To file a state extension: 

  1. From within your TaxACT return (Online or Desktop) click the Filing tab
  2. Click File Extension directly below the blue tabs
  3. Select Federal and State or State Only as appropriate for your situation. You must have a state attached to your return for these options to appear. 
  4. The program will proceed with the interview questions for you to enter or review your extension information 

In some cases, no extension form is needed. The program will indicate what is required for your state. If you need to print a payment voucher or extension form, you will be prompted to do so in the filing steps.

TaxACT supports the electronic filing of extension forms for the following states:

  • Arizona
  • District of Columbia
  • Louisiana
  • Maryland
  • New Jersey
  • New York
