To authorize the IRS to discuss your return with someone else (for example, a relative or paid tax preparer), you must provide that person's name, phone number, and PIN (any 5-digit number created by the designee). This information will be entered into the Q&A.

Tax professionals should complete the Third Party Designee section on Form 1040 U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, Page 1.

To change this selection in the TaxAct® Q&A:

  1. From within your TaxAct return (Online or Desktop), click Federal. On smaller devices, click in the upper left-hand corner, then click Federal.
  2. Click Miscellaneous Topics in the Federal Quick Q&A Topics menu to expand, then click Third Party Designee.
  3. On the screen titled Third Party Designee, click Yes, complete all of the fields on the next screen, then click Continue. If you don't want to name a third-party designee, click No and repeat the electronic filing steps to resubmit the return.

Note that any link in the information above is updated each year automatically and will take you to the most recent version of the document at the time it is accessed.
