Reject Codes IND-039, IND-040, and IND-041

The Third Party Designee box at the bottom of Form 1040 should be marked YES if you want the IRS to speak to someone other than the taxpayer or spouse about their return (for example, a preparer or another family member). If this box is marked YES, you must also enter the name, phone number, and a PIN (any 5 digits they choose) for the designee. Each of these lines must have an entry if YES is selected.

If you do not want to name a third party designee, mark NO and repeat the electronic filing steps to resubmit the return.

To change this selection in the TaxACT Q&A:

  1. From within your TaxACT return (Online or Desktop) click on the Federal Q&A tab
  2. Click Miscellaneous Topics to expand the category, then click Third Party Designee
  3. If you select Yes, you must complete each of the fields on the next screen
