Form 1098-T - Who Enters This in TaxAct?
1

Either you, your dependent, or both of you may enter Form 1098-T Tuition Statement and other education information in TaxAct®.

  • If you claim a dependent, only you can claim the education credit. Therefore, you would enter Form 1098-T and the dependent’s other education information in your return.
  • If you do not claim a dependent, the student can claim the education credit. You would not need to enter the 1098-T or other education information in your return.
  • The student must report any taxable scholarship income. This means that even though you may have entered the education information on your return (in the case where you claim the dependent), the dependent might also want to enter the education information in his or her return to determine if any taxable scholarship income must be reported.
