New Jersey - Schedule NJ-COJ User-Entered Fields Line 1 Line 9
1

Due to the large number of different jurisdictions that could be paired with a New Jersey return, the taxpayer must determine the amounts for lines 1 and 9 of New Jersey Schedule NJ-COJ. These amounts (income properly taxed by both New Jersey and other jurisdiction during the tax year and an actual tax paid to other jurisdiction) are not automatically transferred to Schedule NJ-COJ from any other form or entry in the program. There are too many jurisdictions that could be paired with the New Jersey return for the program to calculate these amounts.

For help determining the amounts to enter, go to the New Jersey Instructions for the NJ-1040 New Jersey Resident Return, page 30, Line 44. The amount depends on which jurisdiction you are working with (there are 44 other states that could be paired with the New Jersey return). The amount of actual tax paid to the other jurisdiction is calculated on the tax return for that jurisdiction. Please note the special instructions for New York, Pennsylvania, or Philadelphia.

To enter these amounts:

  1. From within your TaxAct return (Online or Desktop) click the State dropdown, then click New Jersey (or NJ) (on smaller devices, click in the top left corner of your screen, then click State, then click NJ).
  2. Click Credit for Taxes Paid to Other Jurisdictions, then click + Add Schedule NJ-COJ to create a new copy of the form or click Edit to edit a form already created (desktop program: click Review instead of Edit).
  3. Continue with the interview process to enter your information.
