Filing a Tax Extension
If you cannot file your tax return by the April filing deadline, you can request an automatic six month extension of time to file. However, an extension of time to file is not an extension of time to pay.
To get an extension, you must file Form 4868, Application for Extension of Time to File. In addition, you'll need to pay an estimate of income tax owed, and send in that amount by the April filing deadline.
TaxACT helps you make a reasonable estimate and walks you through filing IRS Form 4868.
