TaxACT Rated Top Favorite by USA TODAY Facebook Super Bowl Viewer Panel

TaxACT Rated Top Favorite by USA TODAY Facebook Super Bowl Viewer Panel
Everyone can view and vote for TaxACT's ad at free.taxact.com.
Cedar Rapids, IA – February 6, 2012 – The nearly 300 voters on USA TODAY Facebook Ad Meter viewer panel rated TaxACT's "Free to Pee" spot the 11th most liked Super Bowl ad. TaxACT's commercial ranked 7.86 on a scale of 0 to 10, finishing just 0.08 points behind 10th place.
Volunteers in the McLean, Va. and Phoenix, Ariz. panels rated how much they liked or disliked ads on hand-held meters as they aired live during the game.
"The panel's ratings show our ad elicited an immediate and strong emotional response, and that's exactly what we wanted," said Kris Peterson, TaxACT's vice president of marketing. "Rather than focusing on the act of doing your taxes, we wanted to connect viewers with the emotion of being totally free – the same feeling you have when using TaxACT's free product."
TaxACT Free Federal Edition is the only free federal tax preparation solution to include all e-fileable forms for simple and complex tax situations.
"Given the size and scope of previous Super Bowl audiences, we decided a national spot was the best way to cut through the industry noise and tell as many consumers as possible that frees are not created equal," said Peterson.
According to The Nielsen Company, Super Bowl XLVI is the most-watched show in U.S. television history with 111.3 million viewers, beating last year's 111.0 million Super Bowl XLV viewers.
The ad was part of a comprehensive marketing campaign spanning Web, email, social media and public relations channels designed to increase brand awareness and engagement. Efforts used free or cost-effective means to generate buzz before and after the ad.
The fast first quarter game pushed TaxACT's 30-second spot to early second quarter. Just hours before kickoff, the company posted the full ad on its web site at free.taxact.com after airing exclusively on Friday as part of NBC's "TODAY" show ad coverage.
Along with the full spot, TaxACT released a 53-second web version on free.taxact.com featuring additional characters and a few more frustrating situations for Tommy, the little boy in the commercial.
The USA Today and Facebook Ad Meter will continue until 6 p.m. tomorrow, February 7, and winners will be announced Tuesday at 10 p.m. ET on usatoday.com as well as in Wednesday's print editions of USA TODAY. TaxACT's 30-second spot is also a contender in Twitter's Ad Scrimmage and YouTube's Ad Blitz. Links to the contest pages can be found at free.taxact.com.

2nd Story Software®, the Makers of TaxACT®, To Tell Its Universal Story of Free to Super Bowl Audience

2nd Story Software®, the Makers of TaxACT®, To Tell Its Universal Story of Free to Super Bowl Audience The bold commercial is part of a multi-dimensional marketing campaign to spread the TaxACT message of free. Cedar Rapids, IA – January 17, 2012 – TaxACT, a giant in the digital tax preparation industry most recognized for its free federal tax solution, is making its Super Bowl debut with a commercial about the human truth of free. TaxACT introduced the first free federal tax preparation and filing solution for all taxpayers during the 2005 tax season. Today, it remains the only free product that includes forms and schedules necessary for many complex returns filed by millions of customers each year. 2nd Story Software's marketing efforts have historically focused on online advertising with some television. The company made the bold leap to the Super Bowl this year in order to cut through the industry's loud advertising noise, particularly in the case of free tax products. "Our message that TaxACT Free Federal Edition is truly free for everyone is relevant for all taxpayers," said Kris Peterson, Vice President of Marketing at 2nd Story Software. "Given that the Super Bowl reached a total audience of 88.7 million viewers between the ages of 18 and 54 last year1, the Super Bowl is the ideal platform to deliver our message." The commercial uses a courageous and gutsy story to put viewers in touch with the feeling of being totally free at emotional, physical and psychological levels. Dave Morton, president of J.W. Morton & Associates advertising agency, said. "It's great that 2nd Story Software is being so bold and confident. The Super Bowl is bold and so is the concept." The commercial's free message immediately resonated with all parties involved in the commercial, making for a one-of-a-kind experience. Director Wayne Craig of Mechaniks production company said, "Everyone involved in the project from start to finish were infected by the story and bought into the vision. I believe after watching the ad, the audience will understand beyond a shadow of a doubt that TaxACT really does help people. The company behind it has a great sense of humor, they're down to earth, and they have an unbelievable free product." Although the plot will remain under wraps until the commercial airs on February 5, 2nd Story Software is building up to it through a comprehensive marketing campaign spanning web, email and social media channels. The build began with the start of Feel the Free Fridays Sweepstakes on January 5, the same day final versions of TaxACT were released. The sweepstakes introduces participants to TaxACT's "totally free feels good" message and engages them in a conversation about free with thousands of others. A new TaxACT web site, free.taxact.com, was launched today. The interactive web site builds excitement for the Super Bowl commercial and football game while reinforcing its free message. The site features sneak peeks of the commercial, offers the opportunity to enter and engage with other participants in the Feel the Free Fridays Sweepstakes, and tests visitors' football knowledge. The commercial can be viewed in its entirety on the site immediately after airing on game day. Like 2nd Story Software, this is the first Super Bowl commercial for Craig, J.W. Morton & Associates, Mechaniks, and Independent post production company of Milwaukee, WI. InfoSpace's management believes that Pro forma adjusted EBITDA provides meaningful supplemental information regarding the Company's performance by excluding certain expenses and gains that management believes are not indicative of its core business operating results. InfoSpace uses Adjusted EBITDA, which is a non-GAAP financial measure, for internal management purposes, when publicly providing guidance on possible future results, and as a means to evaluate period-to-period comparisons. InfoSpace believes that Adjusted EBITDA is a common measure used by investors and analysts to evaluate its performance, that it provides a more complete understanding of the results of operations and trends affecting the Company's business when viewed together with GAAP results, and that management and financial statement users benefit from referring to this non-GAAP financial measure. Accordingly, InfoSpace also believes that the presented Pro forma adjusted EBITDA is meaningful information for financial statement users. InfoSpace's and TaxACT's Pro forma non-GAAP net incomes are calculated by adjusting Pro forma GAAP net income, less pro forma interest imputed on the debt incurred related to the acquisition of TaxACT's operations and pro forma income tax expense, to exclude the effects of discontinued operations (including loss from discontinued operations, net of taxes, and loss on sale of discontinued operations, net of taxes) and the non-cash portion of income tax expense from pro forma continuing operations. The non-cash portion of income tax expense from pro forma continuing operations represents a reduction to cash taxes payable associated with the utilization of deferred tax assets, which are primarily comprised of U.S. federal net operating losses. Due to the Company's continued ability to offset a substantial portion of its cash tax liabilities through 2020 provided by these deferred tax assets, management believes that excluding the non-cash portion of income tax expense from pro forma continuing operations and the effects of discontinued operations from its Pro forma GAAP net income provides meaningful supplemental information to financial statement users regarding the Company's performance and the valuation of its business. Accordingly, InfoSpace also believes that the presented Pro forma non-GAAP net income is meaningful information for financial statement users. Pro forma adjusted EBITDA and Pro forma non-GAAP net income should be evaluated in light of the Company's financial results prepared in accordance with GAAP, and should be considered as a supplement to, and not as a substitute for or superior to, GAAP net income. These non-GAAP financial measures presented, both Pro forma adjusted EBITDA and Pro forma non-GAAP net income, for the combined entities InfoSpace and TaxACT, do not necessarily reflect the results of operations that would have existed had InfoSpace operated those organizations as a combined business. (2) As presented in the Condensed Consolidated Statements of Operations (unaudited) for InfoSpace and the unaudited consolidated statement of earnings for TaxACT's operations. (3) Other loss (income), net for InfoSpace primarily consists of litigation settlements, adjustments to the fair values of contingent liabilities related to business combinations, gains on resolutions of contingencies, interest income, foreign currency gains or losses, and gains or losses from the disposal of assets. The amount for TaxACT includes expenses incurred related to the H&R Block failed transaction process and pro forma interest expense inputed on debt. (4) The amounts are computed at the statutory rate of 35 percent. (5) Amounts previously disclosed have been revised to reflect the effect of classifying InfoSpace's Mercantila e-commerce business as discontinued operations. (6) The amount for InfoSpace represents a gain on a litigation settlement. The amount for TaxACT represents expenses incurred related to the H&R Block failed transaction process. (7) The amounts are computed at the statutory rate of 35 percent, less 2 percent alternative minimum tax payments.

    <td>$0.85</td>

    <td>$1.21</td>

</tr>

</table>

<p>(1) InfoSpace's and TaxACT's Pro forma adjusted EBITDAs are calculated by adjusting net income (loss) determined in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles ("GAAP"), less pro forma interest imputed on the debt incurred related to the acquisition of TaxACT's operations and pro forma income tax expense, to exclude the effects of discontinued operations (including loss from discontinued operations, net of taxes, and loss on sale of discontinued operations, net of taxes), pro forma income taxes, depreciation, amortization of intangible assets, stock-based compensation expense, and other loss (income), net (which includes such items as litigation settlements, adjustments to the fair values of contingent liabilities related to business combinations, gains on resolutions of contingencies, interest income, foreign currency gains or losses, certain transaction expenses, and gains or losses from the disposal of assets), as detailed above. Accordingly, InfoSpace also believes that the presented Pro forma adjusted EBITDA is meaningful information for financial statement users.</p>

<p>InfoSpace's and TaxACT's Pro forma non-GAAP net incomes are calculated by adjusting Pro forma GAAP net income, less pro forma interest imputed on the debt incurred related to the acquisition of TaxACT's operations and pro forma income tax expense, to exclude the effects of discontinued operations (including loss from discontinued operations, net of taxes, and loss on sale of discontinued operations, net of taxes) and the non-cash portion of income tax expense from pro forma continuing operations. Pro forma adjusted EBITDA and Pro forma non-GAAP net income should be evaluated in light of the Company's financial results prepared in accordance with GAAP, and should be considered as a supplement to, and not as a substitute for or superior to, GAAP net income.</p>

<p>These non-GAAP financial measures presented, both Pro forma adjusted EBITDA and Pro forma non-GAAP net income, for the combined entities InfoSpace and TaxACT, do not necessarily reflect the results of operations that would have existed had InfoSpace operated those organizations as a combined business.</p>

<p>(2) As presented in the Condensed Consolidated Statements of Operations (unaudited) for InfoSpace and the unaudited consolidated statement of earnings for TaxACT's operations.</p>

<p>(3) Other loss (income), net for InfoSpace primarily consists of litigation settlements, adjustments to the fair values of contingent liabilities related to business combinations, gains on resolutions of contingencies, interest income, foreign currency gains or losses, and gains or losses from the disposal of assets. The amount for TaxACT includes expenses incurred related to the H&R Block failed transaction process and pro forma interest expense inputed on debt.</p>

<p>(4) The amounts are computed at the statutory rate of 35 percent.</p>

<p>(5) Amounts previously disclosed have been revised to reflect the effect of classifying InfoSpace's Mercantila e-commerce business as discontinued operations.</p>

<p>(6) The amount for InfoSpace represents a gain on a litigation settlement. The amount for TaxACT represents expenses incurred related to the H&R Block failed transaction process.</p>

<p>(7) The amounts are computed at the statutory rate of 35 percent, less 2 percent alternative minimum tax payments.</p>

Don't wait for the outcome of pending legislation to do year-end tax planning and start a 2010 return. Cedar Rapids, IA – October 4, 2010 – 2nd Story Software® released preview versions of TaxACT® 2010 Free Federal and Deluxe Editions today. TaxACT preview versions provide year-end tax guidance and allow users to get an early start on next year's return. The interview notifies users when part of their return is contingent on the outcome of tax legislation, allowing them to enter data or skip the question. TaxACT will estimate 2010 federal and state taxes based on the information users enter or import. The estimates can then be used to help make year-end adjustments to minimize their tax bill. "We may see fairly significant changes to tax law over the next few months, but this has happened before," reminds Lance Dunn, CPA and President of 2nd Story Software. "Our software updates as laws change. The bottom line is that at filing time, TaxACT guarantees accurate calculations and the biggest possible refund." New features and enhancements in TaxACT 2010 were designed with a specific goal. "We want the TaxACT experience to exceed users' expectations, whether they're doing their own taxes for the first time, are new to TaxACT or have used TaxACT for the last 12 years," explained Dunn. TaxACT 2010 Free Edition still allows everyone to prepare, print and e-file a federal return free, but this year it's even easier. The updated and easier-to-use interface has more navigation options and easier access to key information. The 2010 Free Edition also features: All e-fileable forms to cover every situation, including itemized deductions and income from rental, business and investments. A new Answer Center that provides personalized tax and program help. New bookmarks that allow users to add notes and easily return to interview questions later. Free tax help via e-mail. Risk-free use with maximum refund, accuracy and satisfaction guarantees. Quick entry tools, including a new option for asset depreciation data. <p><strong>TaxACT&reg; 2009 enables all taxpayers with simple and complex returns to prepare, print and e-file free - without restrictions.</strong></p>

<p><strong>Cedar Rapids, IA</strong> - <strong>January 19, 2010</strong> - For the fourth consecutive year, 2nd Story Software&reg;, the makers of TaxACT, is offering all taxpayers completely free federal tax preparation and e-filing.</p>

<p>Although TaxACT participates in the Internal Revenue Service&apos;s Free File program, TaxACT offers its Free Federal Edition to all taxpayers - regardless of age, income, state of residence, military status or complexity of return.</p>

<p>TaxACT was the first to offer free federal tax software and free e-filing to all American taxpayers in the 2005 tax season.</p>

<p>&quot;Everyone should have access to free federal tax preparation and e-filing - without any restrictions,&quot; says Lance Dunn, CPA and President of 2nd Story Software. &quot;TaxACT also believes free federal preparation should be complete, which is why TaxACT now includes all e-fileable forms needed for complex and simple returns.&quot;</p>

<p>TaxACT Free Federal Edition also includes several new features, including Stock Assistant to make entering and reviewing investment information faster and easier, and data import from PDF copies of 2008 federal returns prepared by several software solutions 1.</p>

<p>As in years past, TaxACT Free Edition also includes unlimited e-mail and Web help, audit assistance, Maximum Refund Pledge and guaranteed accuracy.</p>

<p>&quot;Taxpayers have a lot of new opportunities for a bigger refund this year,&quot; Dunn adds. &quot;TaxACT Free Federal Edition walks users through all of the new credits and deductions so that no money is left on the table. Even after you&apos;ve completed the federal interview, TaxACT Examiners and Alerts identify potential errors and missing information to ensure your savings are maximized and correct.&quot;</p>

<p>With free e-file and direct deposit, TaxACT users can have their refunds in as few as eight days. The option to purchase U.S. Savings Bonds with their refund is also available this year.</p>

<p>TaxACT Free Federal Edition users can choose between online or downloadable versions. With both versions, it's free to prepare, print and e-file a federal tax return.</p>

TaxACT® Prices Remain Fixed for Late Filers

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA — March 27, 2009 — Although some tax preparation software companies may raise prices for late filers, all TaxACT prices will remain steady through April 15. According to its Web site, Intuit® may raise prices for most of its TurboTax® Online (SM) products by $20 to $30 for the millions who don’t file by March 27. According to the IRS, 1 in 5 taxpayers wait until the final week to file by the April 15 deadline. Last year, 27.1 million taxpayers – more than 20 percent – waited to submit their income tax return. In a year when tax returns e-filed from a home computer are at a record high of nearly 52 million1 , it would make perfect sense for 2nd Story Software®, Inc., the makers of TaxACT, to follow competitors’ lead. However, company leaders believe taxpayers should not be punished for filing closer to April 15. Their view is rooted in the concept the company was founded upon – that no one should have to pay to prepare their federal taxes. "We believe taxpayers should have the choice to prepare their returns for free or at an affordable cost, regardless of whether they file on January 15 or April 15. That’s why our prices have remained steady after they’re set at the beginning of each tax year," explained Leigh Aragon, spokeswoman for 2nd Story Software, Inc. TaxACT Standard allows all taxpayers, regardless of income level, to prepare, print and e-file their federal return for free. Designed for both simple and complex returns, TaxACT Standard includes forms and schedules that other free products do not, as well as maximum refund and accuracy guarantees and unlimited e-mail support from tax specialists. TaxACT Online Standard customers can prepare, print and e-file a state return for $13.95. At $9.95, TaxACT Online Deluxe includes extra features, most notably phone support from tax specialists, audit-backed values for non-cash charitable donations and a FAFSA worksheet. TaxACT Online Ultimate Bundle, the highest priced TaxACT Online product at $16.95, allows customers to prepare, print and e-file both a federal and state return. Despite the explosion of free federal tax preparation software in recent years, TaxACT has remained the No. 2 destination2 for online tax preparation. TaxACT products continually provide users with well-informed tax strategies in an easy-to-use application, while maintaining focus on providing the best value for customers. As of March 6, 2009, the IRS estimated the number of e-filed tax returns had increased 6 percent compared to the same time last year. According to collective week end reports for the Web site, www.TaxACTOnline.com, released by Hitwise™ during the 2005, 2006 and 2007 tax filing seasons.

TaxACT® Asks Taxpayers "Where Do You Do Your Taxes?"

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA--(Marketwire - February 4, 2009) — 2nd Story Software, Inc., the creators of TaxACT tax preparation software, announces the launch of WhereDoYouDoYourTaxes.com. The site features thousands of comments from satisfied TaxACT customers, a daily stream of tax tips and important tax news. Additionally, WhereDoYouDoYourTaxes.com includes an interactive video section currently featuring more than a dozen videos created by TaxACT employees. "'Where Do You Do Your Taxes?' is TaxACT's advertising theme for the 2008 tax season, and we wanted to extend that idea in a fashion more concrete than through traditional banner ads and our homepage, www.TaxACT.com. WhereDoYouDoYourTaxes.com allows us to share positive feedback from our customers and provide those unfamiliar with our products reasons to try TaxACT," said Leigh Aragon, spokesperson for 2nd Story Software. Ms. Aragon continued, "We're launching a video contest on February 1. Visitors will be able to submit videos to the site between February 4 and April 10. Anyone can visit the site and vote for their favorite video. The top vote-getter will win $500, with prizes for the top 6 vote-getters. Winners will be announced on April 15. Video criteria and official rules can be found on the website. We'll be adding additional features to WhereDoYouDoYourTaxes.com throughout the tax season that will create additional opportunities to engage our customers and help us improve their experience with our product." WhereDoYouDoYourTaxes.com is TaxACT's first true entry into the rapidly emerging social web. "We wanted to make sure that we were using best practices and ethics for the space before we dived in. By taking steps to ensure we started off as good citizens in new media, that led to a longer timeline for developing this content," explains Greg Hollingsworth, Online Marketing Specialist for 2nd Story Software and developer of WhereDoYouDoYourTaxes.com. "We felt it was important to weigh the experiences of others before jumping in and treating the social web as another direct marketing channel. This site represents the beginning of what we hope will become a great resource for our customers, as well as a way for us to become closer to them. We want our customers to know that their feedback is of the utmost importance to us and that we take their requests very seriously. This website puts us in a better position to open that direct line of communication."

TaxACT® 2008 Standard — Taxes Done Right

Cedar Rapids, IA – January 8, 2009 — 2nd Story Software®, Inc., developers of TaxACT, announces the release of TaxACT Standard for the 2008 tax year. TaxACT pioneered free Federal tax preparation software to all taxpayers more than a decade ago and continues to be a value leader in tax preparation software. TaxACT allows users to prepare, print and e-file their Federal tax return for free starting today. If users opt for e-filing with direct deposit, they can have their return in as few as eight days1. "TaxACT was created around the belief that no one should have to pay to prepare their federal taxes, and that philosophy is what keeps TaxACT at the forefront of the tax preparation software industry. Our focus for this season was creating a better user experience for our customers. We’ve worked hard to simplify the program’s interface and navigation. We’ve also added videos to the interview that will help users transition through the process," says Lance Dunn, CPA and President of 2nd Story Software, Inc. "We also wanted to provide our Standard users with a clearer picture of the information they’re providing to the IRS, so we added the Credit, Deduction and Income Examiner™ which provides a top-down overview of their information. Plus, with our new Maximum Refund Pledge, if you get a larger refund anywhere else, we’ll give you $4.95, just for trying TaxACT." TaxACT 2008 Standard TaxACT Standard is a fully featured tax preparation product that provides support for 1040EZ, 1040A and long form 1040 returns and supports 70 tax forms and 16 schedules (including Schedule C for small business owners). TaxACT users have the added assurance that Taxpayer Support™ is available without limits on time or number of questions via email. No other leading tax software package provides unlimited tax help to its customer at no additional cost. 1 In general, the IRS estimates that it will take 8-15 days for taxpayers who e-file their return and direct deposit to receive their federal tax refund from an accepted tax return.
TaxACT: Straightforward Pricing leads to Best Overall Value

Cedar Rapids, IA – December 11, 2008 — There has been a lot of discussion over the last few days about the increasing costs consumers may see when preparing their taxes next year. Rising software costs, new fees, charges for e-filing, these are all important factors to consider when choosing tax preparation software. However, there is one thing that is not being talked about, the cost to file a state return. "Most people have to file both Federal & State taxes, and State tax preparation is where the cost really lies for many taxpayers. With TaxACT, users will never pay more than $13.95 to prepare, print or e-file a state return. In some cases our competitors charge as much as $50 to prepare and file one state return," said Lance Dunn, CPA and President of 2nd Story Software, Inc, the makers of TaxACT. "TaxACT has spent more than a decade producing a high-quality, low-cost tax preparation solution for American taxpayers. While our competitors have historically raised their prices and fees, TaxACT has made a commitment to being a value leader in the industry." TaxACT Standard is free for all taxpayers, regardless of income or age and can handle 1040, 1040A and 1040EZ federal returns.
